Schurr Sails has gained a vast amount of
experience in designing and building sails for gaff rigged and traditional boats in the
past several years.
Our recent projects include:
Cyrus E. King - 65' Chesapeake Bay Bugeye
Wandrin' Star - Luzier 55'
Breeze - a 58' gaff rigged motor sailor
Ireland - 62' Biloxi Schooner
Ti Ka Bana - 55' Tom Colvin
Island Girl -55' Tom Colvin
21' Fish Class - 10 complete suits
Numerous small sailing dingys with a variety of rig configurations
Our outlook on traditional sailmaking is to use modern sailmaking techniques
and materials to produce sails that are aesthetically attractive, easy to handle, durable
and perform well.
Designs:
We understand gaffs, topsails, fishermen, gunters, staysail schooners, Chinese lugs,
balanced lugs, sprit rigs and lateens.

1950 Fish Class Sloop
Materials:
We use soft finish DacronŽ and polyester sailcloth from a variety of
suppliers including Bainbridge, Challenge, Hayward and Contender. We buy white, tanbark and
Egyptian cream in widths from 18" to 54". Our panel layouts can be leech
cut, mitered, scotch cut or crosscut depending on the owners specifications.
Seaming:
Our seams are machine sewn with UV protected polyester thread with double or triple
stitching where appropriate.
Finishing:
We are advocates of modern bench work as well. We don't believe in hand-sewn rings,
rat tails, internal headboards or canvas cloth. Progress in sail making is too important to
not take advantage of. Our hardware includes 3-ton stainless steel rings, nickel plated
bronze grommets and hand sewn slides.
